Pseudotropheus
Die Gattung der Pseudotropheus ist eng verwand mit der Gattung der Melanchronis und ist genauso wie diese endemisch im Malawisee, in dem er in vielen verschiedenen Arten und Variationen auftritt. Auch gehört der Pseudotropheus, genauso wie der Melanchronis zu der Gruppe der Mbuna. Typisch für diese Gattung sind die größeren, zweispitzigen, äußeren Kieferzähne und die kleinen und dreispitzigen inneren Kieferzähne sowie die kleinen und dicht zusammenstehenden Schlundzähne. So gut wie alle Buntbarsche des Malawiesee ist auch der Pseudotropheus ein Maulbrüter.
